I agree. I was an IBD analyst and I should say that 9 out of 10 associates who had an MBA were not analysts before B-school.
If anything most IBD analysts choose not to return after their MBA because they were traumatized.
Last but not least, b-schools see way too many applications from IBD analysts.. They go for candidates with more diverse backgrounds.

You definately don't have to be an analyst to get into i-banking after receiving an MBA.
As many people have already responded, most i-banking analyst do not return simply because they don't want to work the hours again. Additionally, all MBA programs have quotas regarding the various work experiences each of their classes have. As a result, it may be a negative for some MBA applicants to have i-banking experience depending on the school they apply to.
If the comments from the various analysts on the i-banking message boards were true, MBAs from H/S/W and possibly Columbia and Chicago are the only MBA's who have any chance of getting a job in i-banking. Further, these same analysts think the only way to get into H/S/W is to be an i-banker from Goldman or MSDW.
Those views are ridiculous. I know tons of people from non-ibanking backgrounds who have gone to H/S/W and all of the other top 10-15 schools. Additionally, they have all had the opportunity (myself included)to work for i-banks (Goldman and MSDW included).
