how do you get experience? |

I am a junior at a state university and have a question which might come across as rather naive to people on this board. But I would really appreciate an answer, and seeing that this is probably the most mature and helpful board on this site, I think I will....
With the best business schools now requiring atleast 4 years of experience, how does one go about getting that, assuming he/she starts out in an analyst position in an investment bank/consulting firm? The reason I ask is because I am a foreign student here, and as a result, changing or moving to new jobs will not be the easiest thing to do, given visa regulations. Therefore, my best (or only) choice would be to stick around in the firm I started out with. However, I realize that most of these firms either kick you out after a third year or push you really hard to get an MBA by that time. I guess my question really is this: are the 4 years entirely necessary, or can a person get into a good business school with merely 3 years of work experience (plus a summer internship)?
If not, then which IB/consulting firms hire analysts and actually promote them to an associate level without necessarily requiring an MBA.
My eventual goal is to go for an MBA, but I realize it's getting more difficult to do so, without the average work experience requirements.
Any help/advice would be appreciated.
