what do you think of someone with an engineering degree getting a job in marketing? would he have a disadvantage compared to someone in marketing who actually majored in marketing in undergrad? (disadvantage for getting into b-school) |

I'm afraid I have a bit of a bias here. I think in today's tech crazy world having the engineering background coupled with the business discipline (be it marketing, finance, whatever) is a big advantage over those people with only one or the other. Of course the size of the advantage depends upon your field, but for the most part I think the advantage is there.
I base this opinion on observations from two places: one, McKinsey loved people with engineering back grounds. In recruiting for summer associateships, I thought my engineering background was more of an asset based upon the conversations I had. two, most technology firms and technology related VCs are looking for people with technical backgrounds and the functional skill sets
I'm sure many people would disagree. Some jobs want to see a long line of specialized work, so you'll have to investigate what it is that you want to do.
