MBA Dilemma for "Experienced" Professionals |

I am 44 and well into my mid-career but considering an MBA as I want to break away from being a stockbroker, something I have done for 3 years - with very little success, especially in view of the post dot.com collapse of NASDAQ. I have 14 years of work experience, including 6 running my own business (event promotion and marketing).
After considerable research, I am leaning toward the idea of using the current ??down time?? to re-tool at San Diego State University. As a resident, it will cost me about $6,000 (rather than ten times that for some fancy Ivy School) and I can complete it in 18 months (full time).
However, with such an unassuming, ??unranked?? third-tier school, I wonder what tangible, marketable value the ultimate credentials will give me in the job market? I am even more disheartened when I read on this site the fate of some class of 2000 NYU (and other Ivy) graduates who are still unemployed?
Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated, especially if my idea is ranked on a scale from ??complete waste of time?? to ??great??!
Many thanks.

Does everyone responding to these messages have a " go to a top tier b-school so I can labor for someone else" mentality. Are there any entreprenuers out there who could offer input on obtaining an MBA.
