In Reply To: I have a friend who is an HR manager who says an MBA is an MBA. I have also heard others say the same thing. Is this the case or is the push for going to the best school basically a lot of hype? Also, I've seen local Tech schools advertising 1-year MBA programs. How would this look on a resume meaning, is it good enough just to have the 3 letters. What are your comments. I'm asking because I have a friend who is considering a program that doesn't require a GMAT, etc. I think this is a big mistake but others in our circle have different opinions.
Message: ...although there is no denying that a top school name helps. In the final analysis, one's circumstances (financial & personal - age, stage of career, motives) dictate the eventual course. I would certainly like to know more about your HR friend. From what I understand reading various postings on this site, HRs usually throw resumes that do not have the "key" words straight in to the .... You guessed it! Your friend seems to be an exception... In my own research, I have realized that there certainly is a lot of hype in MBA "packaging" and "marketing". After all, in the final analysis, an MBA is merely a product. Having said that, top schools do encourage - and attract - many very very bright individuals. And it seems that companies look for (and compensate handsomely) such individuals. They certainly know where to find them. These school also have a tradition and an existing network of well-placed alumni worldwide. Such a powerful network of contacts must be worth a lot. I have been considering an MBA at SDSU but have been dissuaded, simply thinking things over and reading postings on this site. My circumstances don??t allow me to take a F/T or P/T program at a top 10-15 school. However, I may very well be able to get into a distance-learning program at Indiana. Now some might say (justifiably) that an on-line MBA is not quite the real thing. But if it is the best I can do, it will have to do! The bottom line is that each of us has to find the best avenue given the limitations of his/her unique situation. At the very least, education from any establishment, no matter how humble the name or rank, is knowledge gained and a step in the right direction.
