In Reply To: Thanks for all the response. Yes, one of my concerns with the P&G offer is that my boss will probably not write good references for my MBA application intentionally so that I could not get in the school, and therefore have to stay and work for him. Financially it seems to be less of a problem because I can opt to work my summer with one of the Big strat outfits and they will pay for my tuition after my summer (that's what I heard). So I can actually borrow money from my relatives and pay it back once I get reimbursed from a McKinsey or Bain. In summary, my concerns with P&G are: 1)Intentionally poor reference letters to keep me, 2)Have to resign and feel sorry for employer. In summary, my concerns with Bain are: 1)Tougher to get into H/W/S because of the number of Bain applicants, 2)Have to do a lot of quant work, unlike P&G, which has more room for leadership and creative work. Any comments/suggestions?
Message: I too feared that when I asked my current boss (at the time of my b-school apps) to write a letter of rec, he would do an intentional poor job, but I found that not to be the case. Most bosses don't want you to be unhappily working away there, and believe it or not, just about everyone is very replaceable. With the MBA you're giving them a great deal of notice, probably 9 months. That's the bigger worry to me, because I saw it. I got great letters of rec from the people I asked at my prior firm, but when word was out that I was looking to go to business school, I stopped getting the choice studies that were meant to develop me. The firm went into the mode of just trying to suck information out of my brain as fast as possible. I can't fault them, but that was a couple of boring three months. It could have been longer if one of the people who wrote my letters would have told someone else in the partner group straight away.
