In Reply To: My "focus" was Information Systems... I liked it so much I stayed on and earned my MS in info. sys. as well. I think that in IS, the "major" really does matter... even if you come out with no hard technical skills, which you really do not get as a result of the MBA. I stayed on for the MS because a number of recruiters told me that it would help my cause to both deepen and broaded my exposure to technology and its related issues. I think the path I took met its needs... albeit I was making a VERY dramatic career move post MBA, going from operations to IS. So the more education I had the better my chances became... I think things are moving so fast related to technology that companies don't have time to spend nurturing people so the ability to hit ground running is a premium. I think this relates to strategy more than people in these threads will admit... I speak from experience in saying that to understand technology strategy you have to have SOME understanding of technical issues. You don't have to code, but understanding system architecture really goes a long way. That is my two cents...
Message: I've been seeing that in various industries as well. Companies would rather hire talent than train and promote from within. They get fresh blood, new ideas, new options. Costs them more up front though. Then their existing internal staff catch on, start shopping themselves around, get additional technical or other training as needed on their own, then leave for greener pastures. If a company does not promote from within, then they have no claim to employee loyalty when that employee decides to go for some career advancement. Some work up through the organization, but most either stagnate, or leave and advance around the organization. It's just the way things have become in publically held companies. What have you done for your career lately?
