The combination of free markets with a paternalistic state is the system that is almost breaking France, burdens Spain and is crushing Europe accross the board, including Scandinavia. There are TONS of intelligent people arguing for free markets, some actually Nobel prizes (Modigliani, Merton, Friedman) so please don't dismiss libertarianism with ad-hominem arguments as if it was a fad among ignorant youngsters. Libertarianism is also behind the economic success of poor countries in the last decade (namely Argentina, Costa Rica) as well as among rich (as Spain).
And please, to that argument that socialism respects human dignity it has been the bullshit put forward by the Cuban revolution for ages. Data suggests on the contrary.
I am not saying that free markets are the only way to go and I do understand that different countries take different approaches. In some, socially oriented capitalism may be the way to go, and their people may accept and even embrace it (eg the Scandinavia you cite). However, it imposes as much cost as the costs of free markets you cite. It is just a question of choice.
It is not fair to dismiss the system that is responsible for the most massive wealth creation in history, just like that. I am sorry, but many smart (not exactly closet losers) people do not agree with you. And if you were not just a pamphlet with no substance, you would recognize it. |
