PhD's at McD's, huh??! Yeah right, sure. NOT!! Time to wake up out there!
First - If you have never worked in Europe don't knock it till you've tried it. I was there for over 2 years and loved it! I wouldn't have come back had I not been transferred.
Second - If the only thing that matters to you is the size of your paycheck them you are truly LOST!!! Time to wake up and figure out what it is you really want (big paycheck for what? travel? security? early retirement? etc)
Yes you pay a large amount in taxes but guess what!?!? You also have a different pace and quality of life. Now I won't suggest that it is for everyone - I fully admit there are definitely trade-offs but don't be so quick to dismiss it out of hand especially when you have never lived/worked there before!!! Full medical coverage, better benefit packages, more vacation time to actually enjoy the money you make nevermind the places you can travel to easily while you are there.
Perhaps it is time to consider the possibility of more to life than how big your salary is, how much you made in an IPO, how expensive your car is, how big your house is, compared to someone else!!

Settle down there Chairman Mao. The problem with europe is not that you don't get paid enough (at least that isn't the problem for most people) but that it is a flagrantly unsustainable system. Comments about how well Europe has done in the economy of 95-2000 are pointless, b/c things were freakishly good. Botswana did well in that period too, but I don't see you pointing to their model as the ideal.
France, and a lot of other Euro countries, are hurdling toward second world status, and the more they try to insulate themselves (e.g. the 35 hour work week) the faster they're going to get there.
Go ahead, work in europe if you want, just don't get angry when the music stops and you don't have a chair.
