I am graduating from a 3rd tier school with a degree in Sociology -- but I would like to get into a top 5 B-school in a few years.
Because of my school, I can't get into a top I-bank or consulting firm -- what job should I take to maximize my chances at B-school?
Is this realistic at all or am I doomed to mediocrity? |

To be honest, I don't think you are being realistic, but then you are definitely not doomed to mediocrity unless you let yourself to be.
One thing that might work is to go somewhere like Japan or Korea, support yourself teaching English at first and look for an opportunity to work at an i-bank or consulting firm as English editor. You will probably be treated like an intern, and you know what can happen to a smart and hardworking intern.
Granted it's another high risk strategy, but I seriously think it might work because if done right it can demonstrate effectively that you understood your limitations but tried to overcome them by taking a risk and aggressively sought after your career goal.
It also adds nice things to write about in your application, like global business and cultural exposure, foreign language skills, quick learning ability, adapting to foreign environment, tenacity, self-discipline, etc. etc.
Just a thought, but it just might be worth a try.
