In Reply To: Sounds to me like we have a lot of bitter graduates from Chicago and Stanford. How can any of you honestly now how these other programs such as Duke and Virginia compare? How dare these schools (Duke, Virgina) step up to the challenge to obtain a better reputation. Is that what you're trying to express? It's evident that everyone is evaluating these schools by its historical recruiting reputation - in that case, look at and discuss the rec. ratings and quit bickering about how Duke was rated better than Standford. Do yourself a favor and get an understanding as to why some of these schools are rated so well instead of using off-the-cuff assumptions based on prestige and a cocky attitude.
Message: Of course, Duke and Virginia are not at the same level as Chicago and Stanford. Everyone knows that, and if you think differently, you're kidding yourself. How many nobels are there at Duke and Virginia? I thought so. The BW rankings are very misleading. What really matters is how the school is perceived by recruiters/business in your area of concentration. The BW rankings take into consideration the happiness of the students, which is irrelevant in the real world. Chicago, for example, fell from no. 3 to no. 10 because students were upset about the responsiveness of the administration to their concerns, and a number complained that the program was too difficult/rigorous. The second issue is not necessarily negative, and both are essentially irrelevant when it comes to getting a job. In finance, you would want to be at Wharton, Chicago, Columbia, or Harvard...even NYU. But not Kellogg, MIT, Duke, Virginia, etc. In marketing, you would want to be at Kellog. Think about what your concentration will be and look at how strong the programs are in that concentration. This will have great impact on your future job prospects for that industry. Do not be misled by the BW rankings--remember, their fundamental job is to sell magazines.
