In Reply To: What is the difference between the two? I want to work in the real estate group of a Top 5 firm. What one is the best and would allow me to do the most in legal research, legal document writing and proof reading?
Message: The ABA considers anyone who works in the legal field who isn't licensed as a lawyer is a paralegal. Some people get certificates, but you don't necessarily need one. The state doesn't require any kind of license, so you could 'legally' say that you are either or. They're both pretty much the same thing, but in common parlance, the kids making photocopies in the basement are the legal assistants, and the person who tells you to make the photocopies are the 'paralegals'.
