Do the big firms recruit at top universities? When do they usually start recruiting?

I go to Stanford, and I know that Cravath as well as Shearman & Sterling are recruiting this coming winter quarter through the Stanford career center's official process. In general, however, I think that most big firms do not recruit at universities, "top" or not. I could be wrong, but that's just what I've heard here and there.
