Message: as a senior engineering undergrad contemplating the next move (law or not), I was wondering if someone here could tell me what the practice of law is really like? compared to engineering specifically. I've talked to an IP lawyer at a high-tech firm and to quote him, it's "dry". is there an opportunity to do leading-edge work, or does law practice involve researching previous cases, finding the subtle differences in the present fact situation, and applying legal principles to analyze them? this is not a smartass question, I'm honestly interested in hearing about a few examples of "challenging", "intellectually stimulating" work that practising lawyers get a chance to do. I know law school would be really exciting (I'm taking an undergrad business law course right now, and it's amazing! the kind of cases my instructor talks about in class, the way students participate in discussions..it's, for lack of a better word, fun! much more interesting than any of my engineering courses) but I know that if I decide to go into an engineering career, I'll definitely have the chance to work on "leading-edge" technologies and push the "state of the art". any responses would be sincerely appreciated.. tia.
