In Reply To: So, where'd you go to law school. I seriously doubt that your experience is (a) generally represnetative or (b) applicable to the top 10 or 15 law schools. Engineers are no more logical or analytic than philosophy or political science majors for example. People like you perpetuate the myth that working with numbers is related to being analytic. That is a stupid social construct that has no grounding in reality. Engineers are certainly not more logical than other types of undergraduate students. Again, engineers falsely believe that because they are manipulating numbers that they are rational. Try again.
Message: I agree that engineers are not more logical than other types of undergrad students. However, the benefit of an engineering degree (or any scientific degree) is that it does require the student to develop analytical skills and logical thought processes. As other posters have commented with respect to writing skills, these are not inherent to engineers, but have been developed to a greater extent than most liberal arts programs (although philosophy is the first exception that leaps to mind). IMHO, engineers tend to benefit from this discipline and it does help in distilling a series of rules from different cases (ie, the traditional legal method). However, it does come at a cost -- less developed writing skills. In short, I see an engineering degree as no more helpful than any other type of previous experience (for example, people who have worked before going to law school tend to do better because they are generally more disciplined than career students). The key for any student is to determine how to parley the student's strengths into better performance and either minimize weaknesses or quickly develop the skills necessary to correct these weaknesses. An Engineer / JD
