In Reply To: some agents do well, most are in smaller firms or boutiques. Some clients prefer agents cause they cost less. Others only want patent attorneys. Our agents make 75% of attorney pay and bill out about 150-235. Pay is always based on billing ratel, so there is your quesiton about raises. Having advanced degrees or relevant industry experience will help. Agents cannot be partner in most law firms in any state big or small. Big money is really only collected on the coasts or maybe Chicago too. and Austin. If you are just interested in money then you can go to a place that pays you based on strictly hours billed, sometimes up to 45-50%. That can be a big windfall for an agent in the EE or Phd Biotech areas. Hey, if you have drafted patents you know this, don't you? You have worked for a patent firm. have you passed the patent bar? Some firms used to pay for your JD. It isn't happening right now. and with 1000 people passing the last patent bar exam, it probably won't be that desperate of a market. good market, not like 1999.
Message: I've filed 10 applications where I was the inventor or coinventor. I've never worked for a law firm. I haven't taken the patent bar. I will take the exam this year. I'm in LA, so maybe there is good money to be made here.
