Here's my situation in brief. I'm an undergrad at Princeton, on track to graduate with a 3.5, 3.6, or 3.7 (I hope! Barring any unforseen drops! =D). I am debating between law or banking, and really don't know which to pick. Part of me wants to run for elected political office in the future, so I know law would be the way to go. But still, another part of me wants to make the big bucks, and I know Banking is the way to do that. And as a Princeton grad, I think I might have an easier chance jumping into banking. I'm kind of a "minority", in that I am a South Asian, but I doubt this will help or hinder my advancement in either career SIGNIFCANTLY (sure it may play a role, but not more so in one industry than another, I believe). What would you advise...banking or law? Thanks for the advice. |

I was in the same boat you're in about two years ago. I'll tell you the short and sweet answer. Above all else, this will be a choice of personal tastes. Both carreers are risky and rewarding... Banking is a bit more risky so the payoffs are greater in the long run -- bankers are FAR more sensitive to the business cycle. Another consideration is that one can go from lawyer to banker, but not the other way around.
