Unfortunately, there IS a bias against foreign trained attorneys in the NY metropolitan area. I graduated from a local NYC law school and befriended quite a number of students who did their JDs in Sri Lanka, England, France, etc. Some of them pursued an LLM and after passing the bar on their 2nd, 3rd, 4th try (it seems to be difficult for most foreign trained lawyers to pass NY) had a LOT of trouble getting interviews and being hired.
The only exception is if you are bringing something to the firm that they value (such as business experience and ability to internationally connect with clients in foreign countries). Otherwise you are going to be shit out of luck.
The LLM will be a better idea only if you are sure you want to practice in that specialty. From my understanding, LLM degrees aren't really that marketable. If you'd like, post your email address and I can correspond with you there about any specifics.
