In Reply To: Your statistics are inaccurate. Based upon your 2 minutes of research, I would have concluded that the average lawyer makes about 70K. However, many lawyers start at 125K or even 150K, and obviously can make millions. Most people would simply say the average is 70K, there is no way that you will start at 125K. You will start at 30K and over 20 years your salary will be 70K. Ridiculous. Successful private or group experience required. Salary with bonus package, plus benefits including signing bonus, health insurance, 401K, malpractice, professional dues, and continuing education. Also seeking Associate Dentists (compensation range of $75,000 to $95,000). When you state that most dentists can't work for a big organization for 6 figures, that is correct. Dentists generally prefer not to work for a large company. And i think that is an advantage. Again, upon graduation, even salaried positions pay 75-95K as stated above. Many people also buy existing practices of retiring dentists. Overall, yes, dentists do make slightly less than doctors, about 140-150K. This is about only slightly lower than an ER physician at 185K or one in internal medicine at around 160K. However, since ER physicians work 55 hours a week vs 37 hours, the dentist actually gets more per hour. I beleive that associates get 125K, but when a 70-80 hour week is assummed, the actual pay is 62.5K if a lawyer were to work 37 hours. Conversely, a dentist could increase clientele and work a 75 hour week to make 280K-300K. Sounds a lot better to me.
Message: 700K in Oregon - I'm assuming that's before the dentist pays his oral hygienists and assistants. I've never heard of a dentist making that much money. I live in the Bay Area and my dentist, who has been practicing for 10 years now, makes about $160K a year working 40 hours a week.
