If you can afford it, look into judicial or industry externships. I too had no luck finding a 1L IP position. Despite a technical background and professional experience. I was able to swing a an esternship with a federal district judge. This was a fantastic experience. And it helped alot during interviews for this upcoming summer. An industry externship is good too because it gives you experience seeing legal issues from the client's perspective - a marketable skill.

I am looking into applying for judicial externships this summer, and was wondering if you have any advice on choosing judges. Does the level of court make a difference, either in terms of the experience you get or how it looks on the resume? If so, which ones would you recommend? (looking in the Southern Calif. area, not sure where you were). Thanks!
