Before you contact the hiring partner. I even get grads from my alma mater who haven't bothered to look at my website bio before they talk to me or send me things. 5 minutes or less, please.
Lie about what you want to do ("I know that document review is the best way to learn complex litigation from the bottom up" etc.). Lawyers are used to lying.
I consider this a catastrophic failure (among other career services failures) of a lower tier (my school as well anything outside the top 15-20) career services. |

True enough.
There is nothing more annoying than someone calling up a corporate attorney to tell them about their keen interest in defending products liability cases. Always thought this went without saying but have since learned that bricks sometimes make better decisions than future lawyers.
And yes, lie. Through your teeth and often. Do it with a smile and a wink. Rest asured we can see right through it but speaking for myself, I appreciate a long string of little white ones about how much you'd like to due diligence corporations and bond with the other associates at the printers. The more sincerity you can show in your lying the better, it bodes well for your career. Even if the interviewer doesn't like lying, it sure beats telling them that you have no interest in what you'll be doing.
God I'm helpful lately. Must be the season.
