To anyone qualified to answer: My boyfriend is a CPA with a few years of experience in tax at a Big Five accounting firm. He is considering pursuing an MBA. I am an attorney, and I suggested that he consider law school as an option. He says that his firm would not place any greater value on a JD than an MBA, and that a JD would not be worth the effort for him. Is this true? Also, if a CPA went on to law school, and subsequently interviewed at brand-name Manhattan firms, would those firms credit his experience, i.e. would my boyfriend be lumped in with all of the other first year associates? |

I am 1L and a CPA (w/ 3 years big 5 experience) at a top 10 law school and have found that I have gotten farther along in the interview process for first year jobs than most of my classmates - FYI: first year jobs are usually pretty hard to get even in this market. I think firms definitely place value on it. I have gotten offers and don't even have any grades!
As far as once you are at a firm, I know that those in the tax group often make more than other in the firm but when that happens I am not very sure. It definitely happens at the partner level and I have been told that the partner track is not as long.
I think an MBA would be a waste of money if he intends on staying at a Big 5 firm - in addition to the stress of working and going to school at the same time! Unless his firm does something different than mine, it won't really cut you any slack or offer tuition reimbursement. For a little more effort, you can get a JD and get paid a lot more a couple of years out ...
Just a 1L's opinion though.
