Finnegan is the one big IP boutique that may survive and they have the best reputation in DC for Litigation and Appellate work, look at some of the CAFC cases, although they screweed up that Eli Lily Double Patenting case and the stock lost 37% in a day. F&R is an agressive firm, I have seen pretty ugly litigation.
P&E has lost a lot of people, especially in DC. A group of them all went to Winston. K&K, B&W, Stern Kessler and Burns Doane may survive the gobbling of boutiques.
At all these firms is std Gunderson structure, Finnegan and Fish & Rich may pay 135 now in PA. Even many boutiques in the valley pay 125. Fish & Neave is a good firm and will probably survive as well, I am looking at one of their patents right now.
You may want to look at a big firm with a humane IP department. The key is that the rest of the firm has to understand that prosecutors cannot bill the 2300 hrs like litigators. I am lucky my firm understands this and the litigating associates do not resent me for billing 1900. I cannot tell you where people are happy, but I can tell where they are UNHAPPY. (shugrue, hunton). I have heard good things about Foley, except that they are old school and a bit slow to change. Dorsey pays above market (130) in DC and has a humane 1850, but the reputation is good not great.
Our firm uses PhDs for biotech, and we still have EE agents, but we won't hire until they pass the patent bar.
