The best place to practice law is in New York city. Forget the rest! Even the silicon valley firms do cookie cutter deals. The legal opportunities in New York are unmatched anywhere else in the world, whether you want to work on child advocacy cases or do M&A deals. Yale, Harvard and Stanford are superb schools that provide a first rate education, but come on: Cambridge? Palo Alto? NEW HAVEN? Those are provincial towns at best. Do you really want to live in Chicago? Watch the Bulls?
If you study law in New York city you will have the opportunity to do a lot of interesting legal work at the various organizations at the same time you are studying. Also, if you choose the right school in New York you will graduate with the ability to think quickly and thoroughly both in an academic setting and on the street. As to the best school in New York - obviously Columbia! See: resources, students, and faculty
In short, Columbia is by far the best school in the city and the city is by far the best place to study and practice law. Choose wisely.

I agree about location with regard to practicing law. In case you haven't noticed, however, NYC has some serious quality of life issues as a result of its popularity. Money is just the beginning.
Take a firm like Skadden, for example. Compare first-year NY pay to first-year CHI pay. Not much of a difference is there? Now compare the purchasing power of the salaries in each location.......big difference. There may be more opportunity in NYC over the long haul but it's not worth it, in my opinion.
So, personally, I'll take the Bulls along with the somewhat reduced opportunity for a big kill. After all, I did get to see Jordan play on numerous occasions and I actually was able to drive my car to the games!
