In Reply To: Congratulations. Doctorwannabe made a decision. Assuming he does well on the MCATs, has a good enough GPA and does not flunk out after the first anatomy exam or pass out after the first 40-hour call on the surgical floor, he may eventually become a doctor. Yes, 7 to 11 years after college he may have the ever-so-coveted board certification in a specialty of his choice. Go ahead, doctorwannabe. But I would love to ask you what you think of your wise choice when you get a whiff of its consequences. You will watch your friends move into corner offices. You will see women in your life drift away because you cannot afford - timewise and moneywise - to court them. And of course, you will be forced to make cheesy excuses for not being able to afford to go to the bar with your well-compensated friends. And you will have realized, like so many of my classmates and now co-workers, that they have emerged out of the medical crucible 5 to 10 years socially and economically behind their peers. But there is one advantage to medicine. If you do go through with the process, all the lawyers on this board will envy you and love to hate you, like they do me:) And that's no small reward. DocMike.
Message: Perspective is everything. I'm not going to say DocMike is wrong. He has chosen to perceive events in the way he has. In medical school, you begin to realize there are two types of students. One acknowledges that medical school is difficult but can laugh about the challenges. The other type loves to sulk and be a pessimist about every unappealing factor. Don't let DocMike frighten you. It's certainly tough but not unmanageable. And I have made friends for life in medical school that I never had before. In addition, I managed to date during my residency and have some fun as well. It's all about how you perceive the series of events.
