In Reply To: "I think it's fairly obvious that for one to become the very best in his field, he must engage in some form of graduate education" -- that is absolutely ridiculous. Sure, if you want to be an eminent scientist or engineer, more education is necessary, but that does not equate to greater financial success in any degree -- in fact, it forces you into continual research. As for going to a professional school as opposed to concentrating on work, most people who are truly the best at what they do have succeeded far before having to pad their resume's with further education. I would like to see your evidence that a grad degree is necessary to be successful these days. Most people clearly get along fine without them, contrary to your friend's pompous statement. It is apparent to me that motivation, focus, and intelligence are the keys to success in this country, and if that entails grad school then so be it, but it is far from necessary.
Message: CVF How is one an elitist because he believes that one has to get a graduate degree to do well? I suppose you think it's a coincidence hat graduate applicants have nearly doubled for the Fall 2002 class since the economy soured. People have lost jobs. They are scared about their future outlook. So what do they do? They spend more money on graduate school. According to your warped logic, these applicants are stupid. After all, they could acquire another job and do just as well. So I suppose you two geniuses are the truly enlightened ones while the other 300,000 applicants are blind. It's not a big deal, really it's not. I'm not personally judging someone's value by their education. It's simply a matter of increasing one's marketability. Don't label us elitists because we and thousands of applicants understand the market economy better than you do. I find it a bit hypocritical that a UT law grad isn't willing to grasp this idea of marketability. You could have attended any other law school. It just so happens that you graduated from UT, a top 20 school. Oh, but I'm sure you attended UT for it's personal enrichment not for it's marketability. Yeah, that's it.
