In Reply To: have no means of income either unless your family is rich. Do you really think most people can survive on a Bachelors degree these days. So unless you become a celebritiy, you are going to have to attain some graduate degree to do well in whatever field you choose to enter So pick your poison. This isn't the 1980's where that BA/BS will provide an a steady income for you. But you aren't a realist in terms of the student calibre at law schools. It's safe to say that at least a 1/3 of your class is full of slackers who don't study at ALL. And I went to a top 5 school. They did well in undergrad without studying and they thought they could pull the same thing in law school. If every law school student studied like the worst med student, he would do fairly well. He may not earn 100K but 60K is not out of the question. And for a practicing attorney, 6 figures in not unheard of in 3-4 years. Furthermore, he won't incur the same debt as a medical school student. In addition, law students intern in their summers which significantly reduce their debt load. Medical students don't have this opportunity. And depending upon one's residency, he may not see green pastures until he is in his late 30's to early 40's. Do you really want to wait that long just to make your first 6 figure salary. Again, I'm not advocating one or the other. Many of you have highlighted the advantages of going to medical school. But I think you are being shortsighted regarding it's benefits.

You must live in some closed world in NYC where everyone has a graduate degree and look down upon the rest of the world. There are lots of people who make lots of money who don't have any degree at all! The most successful businesman on the planet, ever, is Bill Gates and he never graduated from college. You only "need" a graduate degree if you want to work in some field where the law prohibits you otherwise from entering. It's illegal to work as a lawyer without a law degree, and the same goes for a doctor. And while it's legal to work in investment banking with just a high school degree, as a practical matter they won't let you in without an MBA. But there are other careers besides law, medicine, and investment banking!!! Yes, there really are. If you read the books by Robert Stanley (like the Millionaire Mind), he documents all those millionaires who don't have graduate school education. (I don't agree with everything Stanley says, he looks down upon those with graduate degrees in much the same way as karenrobinson looks down on those without graduate degrees, and both are wrong for doing that.) Look at the press releases put out by public companies when they hire new CEO's or other top officers. Some of them have MBA, but many of them just have BS or BA degrees! You can be a CEO of a public corporation without an MBA! Yes there are so many jobs besides law, medicine, and investment banking.
