In Reply To: If you can get into a top law school, especially the top 6: Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Columbia, NYU, Chicago, you are pretty much guaranteed a job that pays six figures when you get out. $100,000 a year for a 25 year old is a pretty good deal. MBAs from top business schools make even more money in investment banking. But it's harder to get an MBA because you can apply to Harvard Law right out of collge, but Harvard Business won't take you until after you've accomplished something in the world of work. If you can't get into one of the top law schools, at least the top 14, then don't bother, but big firms that pay six figure salaries hire only from the top 14 schools. Medical school is safe. Doctors also make six figures after they've finished their residency and intern. Also you don't have to worry about the economy. With the economy tanking the way it is right now, all bets are off.
Message: He is right about a couple things: do not go to a bad law school; if you can get into a top 6 law school it is worth it to go -- but this whole top 14 thing is completely off. He has never made very intelligent or informed comments on this board -- he is an admitted failure and is very clueless about top firms. Look at UCLA's median starting salary -- 125K -- higher than most in the top 15; Texas, where I attend, also has great opportunities for making 125k+. As for your specific situation, don't go to lawschool. You sound like you need something of a guarantee, and it will not be there for you (especially if you hate lawschool and don't do well). If you are sure you can't get into a top 15, then that probably means you are heading for below 20/25. While getting a good job is possible, these are NOT a guaranteed ticket to easy money and can be a risk for someone that just wants money. It is possible, but you have a good chance of being very disappointed, and if you love money like you say, trying to get out of debt with a shitty salary will really make you pissed at life. Essay grading does seem arbitrary to some extent, but on the other hand there are those people that consistantly make excellent grades -- they must be doing something right, but it is frustrating when your worst grades are in the classes you think you know the best. Again, this points to medical school for some one like you, especially if you prefer cut-and-dry memorization to reasoning and writing (if you were to pick only between the two choices) though medical school requires more sacrifice in the short term and bigger loans. -- Make sure you become the right kind of Doctor if you want to maximize your financial returns.
