In Reply To: My situation: Top 5 law school, top 15% of class after 1st year. The clerkship application process begins this fall. My question is: is it worth it? I know that it is very prestigious and many people say that it can be a great experience. But it is possibly sacrificing $80,000 immediately. Yes, lots of firms give bonuses when you complete the clerkship and they consider you a 2nd year associate. But is it worth it? You will probably say, well it depends what you want to do? I'm not exactly sure. I am interested in lots of things in the law - I really enjoy so much of it. Additionally, if you say - yes, do a clerkship - then what would you suggest? I would only be looking at Federal clerkships, but would you suggest a District court or an Appellate court? Thank you
Message: The judge I extern for receives a magazine called the Federal Lawyer (or something close). Just yesterday I read an article in the June 2001 edition that addresses your concerns head on. The gist of the article is that federal clerkships are always going to be worth the opportunity cost of foregoing an immediate position at BIGLAW. Check out the article.
