In Reply To: I was in a similar situation to you (top 5, top 10%). I chose to clerk even though I had every intention of being a corporate lawyer. My thought process was that I was interested in learning about different facets of the law before I bogged down in one area. Even though I had no intention of ever going into criminal law or civil litigation, these areas were fascinating to me. Depending on the judge you work for and the types of cases your court tends to get, it can be an incredible experience. Yes, you're giving up a lot of money. You're right, the clerkship bonus does not even begin to make up for it. Also, you start out at your firm as a second year, meaning you're expected to know things other second years know from their previous year on the job. In other words, the learning curve needs to be much steeper than normal. All that taken into consideration, however, I would do the clerkship again. Good luck in your choice.
Message: if you have the credentials, don't give up this precious chance. a clerkship looks great on your resume and if you ever try to become a prof or a judge, this experience will be crucial
