I'm desperately trying to decide. Let's not discuss the obvious: both are good schools, neither is the "wrong" choice, etc. Can someone give me some concrete advice/evidence as to which is better for practicing in CA? |

I would agree with above reply that stated you should stay in Cali. I understand that both Columbia and NYU are great schools, I had my choice between them as well. I just chose not to go to them for two reasons:
1) They are sooooo freaking expensive and,
2) They are way the hell out in NY when I knew I wanted to work in Cali and at least three schools would get me the same job anyway.
Stanford, Boalt, and UCLA are all incredible regional and national schools. I didn't get into the first two, but I am happy nonetheless at UCLA. 50% of UCLA students end up with their job of first or second choice and it is one third of the price of private schools. I'm sure that the number of first choice jobs is even higher at Boalt (but for the same price). Stanford -- well nothing even needs to be said there. I am just wondering why live in NY when you can have beautiful Cali weather, a more laid back attitude, and a much less expensive education and get the same job?
If you really are set on going to either NYU or Columbia, I don't think it will make much of a difference. Since I have worked at two large firms I know that at least both of them have a fair number of NYU/Columbia grads and neither was favored (as far as I could tell). Of course both firms had far more people from local school like Boalt, Hastings, UCLA, Stanford and USC. Final ruling between the two schools though -- NYU grads seemed more fun and social.
