I am contemplating applying to Georgetown for an LLM in Tax. I graduated from a tier 2 school, top 20% and law review. Can anyone tell me its admission standards and possible placement possibilities? I realize NYU is more highly thought of, but I prefer to live in DC. Is a tax LLM from Georgetown worth the cost and forebearance of salary? I currently work in real estate for a major corporation. |

You will have no problem getting into G-town for LLM. If you were on law review at second tier, it's automatic.
Why do you want a tax LLM? To get a job in BIGLAW?
My GUESS is that you can get into BIGLAW with tax LLM from NYU if you get high grades.
A tax LLM from NYU with mediocre grades is a near guarantee of job at Big 5, but those jobs suck because you have to work in cubicle, you get paid less than BIGLAW.
G-town is the second best Tax LLM after NYU. But there aren't very many tax LLM programs, so second place in a five way race doesn't necessarily mean all that much.
Hopefully someone who knows more about this will give you a better answer.

I don't blame you for wanting to live in DC over NYC. But it's only one year full time, so you can handle 9 months in NYC. If you're going to put in the time and money, you may as well do it at the best school.
