I have the same question as the original poster, and one further.
Firstly, some background: I am glad to hear that NYU and CU are regarded as equivalents -- I've been accepted into NYU and waitlisted at Columbia -- and I've run into a number of the sort of people lately who contend that NYU is of inflated reputation. I expected this -- but I have definitely succumbed to some insecurities.
My interests are a)clerking/working in academia and govt/policy, or (if I don't have the nerve to forgo big salary) b) working at a firm in California (I'm from the east coast, but want to leave). If I do get into Columbia, I don't know what I would do, because I've received a small scholarship at NYU and understand the school is simply a wonderful place to be in school.
Will I be at a disadvantage given my goals if I attend NYU? |

AS a Columbia Studnet I will concede that as far as firms go there is probably not a lot of distinction between NYU and Columbia. However, if you are interested in going the judiciary route and clerking I think COlumbia has an edge considering that Columbia has more history and has more upper level judicial alumni, including a few Supreme Court judges. As far as location, if your not into the bars and clubs on the upperwestside its a 20$ cab ride from the village.
