Let's think up a list of common mistakes that would be useful for prospective law students. Below is my attempt to get such a list going:
1. Justify going into BIGDEBT because he/she expects to make it into BIGLAW.
2. He/she places too much emphasis on US News & World Report Rankings.
3. He/she fails to research the relavant job market.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.

#4 (or whatever). Failing to realize that the area of law you're interested in is the province of BIGLAW.
I went to law school wanting the leverage my foreign language skills and international experience into working on cross-border business deals.
Lo' and behold I came to find out that it's pretty much the exclusive domain of BIGLAW and boutique, which meant that I had to be in the top of the class.
I had no idea when I pursued this that I would have to have all A's and B+'s to get where I wanted to be. My international experience did at least get me interviews with BIGLAW, but they all basically told me that my C's wouldn't cut it. I don't even know why they called me in.
Lesson learned: If you have a certain specialty in mind, check to see if small and medium firms that are less grade snobby practice in this area--or else you might get hung out to dry like I did.
