Talking about arrogance. There is plenty of arrogance in many BIGLAW lawyers and firms. I'll give you some examples. I went to a non-legal happy hour and saw a BIGLAW lawyer who I have met before. He was vying for the woman I was taking to to and said in front of the both of us, "I work at BIGLAW. He doesn't. He's a nothing sole practitioner. I have the security of BIGLAW. He doesn't. I work on big important cases. He doesn't. I make more money than he can ever dream to make and I get a lot of perks." (There is absolutley no exaggeration here. He was that brazen.)
I replied, "I have freedom. You don't. I can come to this happy hour wearing shorts and loafers. You can't. You probably have to go back to the office later. I don't. You work 80 hour weeks. I don't. I may have less security than you but the more risk you take in life the greater the potential reward. And by the way there are plenty of sole practioner and small firm lawyers out there that make more money than BIGLAW partners. I don't know if I'll ever make that much. Maybe I will, maybe I won't but I'll always have my freedom."
P.S. The girl I was talking to left with him and since she was that shallow they were a better match for each other. He did me a favor in a way.
Again. I went on a blind date with a BIGLAW lawyer. All went well. We got along fine. I call her a few days later and she said she can't see me again. Her reason, "I talked it over with my friends who work here and they said we come from two different places and career wise you aren't in the same place as me. Its like you are on the other side of the tracks." Whew, she was talking to me as if I came from a trailer park and she lived in the posh section of town and her parents didn't approve. I couldn't believe the hubris and bluntness.
Yet again. I have a friend who is naive enough to think that all lawyers around here all know each other and he asked BIGLAW lawyer if he knew me. He asked what firm I worked for and my friend said I was a sole practitioner. He replied, "Oh, he's one of THOOOOSE". (encounter as told to me by my friend)
I have met many BIGLAW lawyers who have simply given me a cold arrogant shoulder. Some have been very nice but they seem to be the minority.
Even if I went to the "right" law school and got a job offer at BIGLAW I wouldn't have to think twice about not accepting. I couldn't and wouldn't work with these elitist snobs no matter what the paycheck is. I would guess that at most of these firms these snobs also try to out snob each other. I spoke to one such woman who worked for BIGLAW and quit her job because of the snobbishness and political environment at her firm and incidentally her firm is "known" as a "great" place to work.
(Not to generalize again but I'm sure there are BIGLAW firms where these attitudes don't prevail. I just haven't in my limited experience encountered one yet.) |
