In Reply To: A law degree isn't worth much. The post 'rude awakening" sums it up: The risk of failure is too great. Mathematically, because of the ranking in law school, 90% or more graduates will be left behind, with a slim to nil chance of ever going BIGLAW. I'm not sure there is such a thing as MIDLAW anymore. The medium firms have identical hiring standards to those of BIGLAW firms. Law school just isn't worth the damn risk. I'll borrow a line from "Star Wars" and Emperor Palpatine when Luke confronted Vader and him in the throne room on the 2nd Death Star. He was using force Lightning on Luke and was about to kill him. "Young fool...Only now - at the end - do you understand." The debt for a graduating lawyer absent a BIGLAW position is financial death. Am I to blame for not doing the research required? Yes. But do I hold the schools responsible for prepetuating the myth of BIGLAW and preying on students' hopes and aspirations? YES. That's why I think America really sucks. Everyone, from your school to your employer, to your local governmental institutions, is only happy when they can suck money off you. Leeches. What's the alternative you ask? There are alternatives. The Netherlands for one. Sure, taxes are high, but you are taken care of. The cities are clean. If you go unemployed, you're paid 90% of what a member of your profession makes working (I assume average member). If your injured, you get worker's comp, no issue, no wrangling. In America, you pay and pay and pay and get zero. Just a good little soldier to do your duty and die. Sorry, I digress. But law school and the legal profession really opened my eyes to what this country is about. Someone screwing someone to get ahead.
Message: I'm only 24 years old, and while I haven't been to law school, I wonder where this mass commercialization and intense focus on money and capitalism came from. Has it always been here and I just haven't noticed? Or is business just in the limelight these days becasue the economic boom has fed everyone's greed? What explains this inhumane focus on the buck at the expense of humanity? Can't wait to get out of the the US - I see some dangerous times ahead for this nation if we can't limit immigration while taking back control of our destiny and moral values (instead of letting the media highlight what should be important). Entertainment and the arts have been the focus of all cultures right before they collapsed (i.e. Rome, every Chinese Dynasty, etc.). Ours will be no different.
