CLS and HLS are basically the same to law firm recruiters, meaning a student with average grades at either school will have exactly the same opportunities. HLS might have a slight edge in Boston and CLS might have a slight edge in New York. As far as clerkships go, the Supreme Court takes a few more Harvard grads, but they have almost the twice the number of students. If you like CLS, I would definitely go there. I had the same options that you face and I chose Columbia and I will never regret it. HLS might open doors, but no doors will open that CLS won't also open. People do recognize Harvard, but there is also a highly negative stigma attached to the school in many circles. The Harvard people in some of the summer classes where my friends worked were completely ostracized socially for no reason other than the fact that they were from Hahvahd. That's silly. They are people just like you and me, but let's face it - when people think of Harvard they sometimes think of such things as arrogance, stuffiness, etc.
Do yourself a favor and go where your heart tells you to go. |

Not to mention that Entertainment Weekly recently listed Columbia as In, and Harvard as Out... Brown was Five Minutes Ago, just to fill out the list... I would have to guess that New York has an edge over Cambridge for atmosphere as well.
