It seems that the more I learn, the less I understand about what the "smart" thing to do is regarding my legal education. As I've posted before, I have several options at hand, somewhat like an LSAT question: First, I must choose whether to attend a good second tier state school or to move across the country to a top 5 school. The latter option involves leaving a fiancee and taking out $100k in loans. Second, I must choose to get an MS, MBA, or neither as part of a joint program with my law degree. Realistically, I can probably only get in to respective science and business ends of the programs at the state school (I am a Biology major, so B-school might be tough to get into anyway). So what the heck does someone in my shoes do? I'm pretty sure that I should go to the top 5 school, but is that true even if it means it will prevent me from getting an MS with my JD? Is the MS in Pharmaceutics or Biochemistry worth getting to go into patent law ... by this I mean a) is it good enough to get me a second look at a patent boutique and b)is it even necessary, i.e. is it Ph.D or nothing? Is patent law something that I should definitely pursue, or should I go into corporate law if I wish to have a good career? Basically it all boils down to me wanting to do the "smart" things, but not knowing what they are. A lack of a good mentor is holding me back, and I need some good advice. I thank you all in advice for any you might provide. |
