In Reply To: In my situation, I'm going to law school because I have a hard science bachelor's degree but don't want to go into medicine. I don't feel like screwing with HMO's or carving up dead people. Patent law seems like a nice option but I'd be outcompeted there unless I got a PhD and I'm not willing to invest the 8 years or so a PhD/JD would take. In both normal cost and opportunity cost it's just too damn much money. I'm starting to get interested in IB due to having a couple friends going into finance and I want to know if I'm damned by not having any major work experience and with my lack of finance and other business courses. That's all. As for the lack of life, time, significant other, and so forth - I don't expect anything different from trying to bill 2400 hours per year. I'd rather get $500k for this effort than $200k (and that is only at a top firm, 3rd year, with bonus).
Message: Jobs in IB are much more competitive than jobs at BIGLAW. IB firms only hire grads from the top 10 law schools WITH finance background. On the other hand, if you can break into IP law, you can do so without a top 10 pedigree (even without a PHD).
