I find your reasoning to be flawed, because of your loose knowledge of the FACTS.
First of all, Powell's ascent was more due to his political instincts than anything else.
I'm not the most adamant Powell fan, for reasons other than the ones you noted, but the man has definitely played his cards right. You see, there's a game in Washington called politics and Powell just so happens to be very adept at it. I'm at a loss to understand why you begrudge the man so. Intellectual capacity does NOT have a direct correlation with success in the political arena. Forget W., I'm sure you've heard of Ronald Reagan, the very individual, or his staff anyway, who picked Powell out of the crowd. While not a brainiac, by any measure, Reagan always understood how the game was played. It's all about image.
In any event, I hope you turn your anger to what is truly impeding your success. As for W., even if you didn't vote for the guy, that's beside the point, he is a vivid example how the world works. There are more guys, like W., at the law firm that won't hire you than there are CP's(Colin Powells). The only difference is these guys actually make partner, because all their grandaddies belonged to the same club. Believe me, I know, I'm an associate at one of the world's premiere I-Banks, and I have to deal with these characters all the time.

I think South Asian Americans effictively disprove any attempt to correlate skin pigmentation with achievement. Although darker skinned than many african americans and hispanics, south asians are the the most educated ethnic group within the united states, and also earn the highest median salaries, based on census data. Lucky for all americans, one million new south asians a year will enter this country over the next few years, mostly technology workers to fuel our economic expansions. A bonus? Us lawyers will be safe from job competition with them, because they will be mostly engineers, scientists, and doctors! God Bless America :)
