But we need midlevels, not entry levels. We are EXTREMELY busy in litigation (I can't remember when I had a weekend off...and we're supposed to be a "lifestyle" firm!) but we have enough first/second years. We need midlevels who can take on responsiblities for cases, have a working skill set, and have experience in the kind of complex litigation we do. We just don't have time to train people, so our hiring is focused on laterals right now. Training people takes too long when the work is flying through the door!

that makes sense. I think a lot of people get burned out on litigation by the second year and leave it as well. This is off the topic of the thread, but I have a question for you - if I am going to be doing litigation mainly in a specialized area, but I also have an interest in another type of litigation, how hard is it to eventually practice in both areas, if my original firm keeps the two areas separate? Ihope that makes sense - I'm trying not to give too much away since I already gave away my location.
