In Reply To: Hi. I'll be a college senior next year, and am essentially trying to figure out what to do with the rest of my life. I have internship offers from BCG and Pricewaterhouse for the summer, but I get this feeling that one day I might want to go on and get a JD. My question is whether I should take the LSAT now, or if I should wait. Do you think that experience in the business world will increase my problem-solving skills and logic abilities, or should I just crack down, take the PR Review, and get it over with now? Do humans really get wiser as the years go by, i.e. will I get a better score in two years? Thanks in advance for the advice!
Message: First of all, DON'T got to PWC, BCG is clearly the better choice. PWC and the rest of the big 5 are a bunch of glorified accountant/programmers, while BCG is a true top-tier strategy shop where you'll be working on interesting engagements. I know this because I graduated college last year and am working at a big 5 firm now. I will also be attending law school next year. I don't feel that the year of work experience really improved my problem-solving or logical skills all that much, but I'm still glad I did it. First of all, working full-time helps you develop the work ethic you'll need for law school, if you don't have it in college (which I didn't). It also shows admissions offices that you are serious about law school and not just applying because you don't know what you want to do and are afraid to join the work force. I think the consulting firm name on my resume helped me get in to law school, because it differentiated me from the masses of paralegals and college seniors that comprise most of the applicant pool. Finally, consulting is a very interesting field and you may decide that you don't even want to be a lawyer, which is a decision that you'd like to make PRIOR to three years of law school. Personally, I might go back to consulting after some time in law practice, and the fact that I worked for a consulting firm for a year will definitely make that transition easier. Good Luck and enjoy BCG this summer. And definitely take Kaplan or PR, they really work for most people.
