This question comes up about every three days or so on a message board somewhere.
I think that the two schools are pretty much equal overall. I chose Columbia over NYU, but only because I wanted to work in SF/SV and was convinced that the Columbia name carried more weight out there. I talked to a surprising number of (admittedly clueless) SF/SV BigLaw lawyers who had never heard of NYU (or thought that it was a part of SUNY), and I didn't want to deal with that when I practiced out in CA.
In NYC, I don't think that one school really has a reputational advantage over the other, and I think that the quality of life is probably better at NYU.
