In Reply To: I'm clueless...pardon the stupid question, but I want to make sure that there's nothing I overlook before it's August and the big event is near. I want to run for office in the Student Bar Association as a 1L. What types of positions are open to 1Ls? How should win votes? Personality? Flyers? Meeting many people? Studious behavior? All of the above? Any advice is welcome.
Message: It's been a while, but here's what I remember about student government in law school. First, in general, it matters MUCH LESS than the little bit it matters at most undergrad colleges. Second, in general, the folks who got elected were polite, personable, and easygoing. Third, there is a certain 1L type who wants has "volunteer malaria"--he or she engages in shameless self-promotion, tries to volunteer for every spare question that the professors asks, and in general tries to live large in their own minds. Most law students pay too much attention to their real school issues to have much regard for this type of student, and I can assure you, when this type of student runs for student government, they print up lots of flyers and come up with campaign mottoes. My advice to you? Be available, be polite, and if you don't win, be the first to volunteer your time over at the local legal aid, where you might actually both help society and improve your resume.
