Topic Name: "Priority" wait list?
Message Name: What does it mean?

In Reply To: I have been wait listed at Duke, Columbia, and NYU. A week after I heard from Duke, they sent me another letter saying that I am in a relatively small group of candidates on the wait list that will be given priority if any spaces open up. I haven't heard anything similar from NYU or Columbia. Does anybody know if these schools have official "priority" wait lists? Have these schools actually told anybody in limbo that they will be considered first, or is the official line "we review all wait listed candidates' applications as spaces become available." What a load of b.s. that is. We all know that they have ranked all the wait listed candidates, even if they don't tell us.
Message: Perhaps we can get back on track in this topic? Why do schools wait list some people? Is it just, "well, we liked you, but not enough to let you attend"? I mean, they know from experience how many people will attend, so how often do they actually use the wait list? Boalt said maybe five people, maybe none get in off the wait list, of a list of two hundred. Does anyone know if wait list means perhaps that the committee was split on a decision? The true cynic in me thinks that it also may be a way of covering themselves in case of lawsuits. Perhaps law students who are not minorities get put in this grouping? I realize this is very cynical and un pc but I am just wondering. Furthermore, it is fine with me if that is the case because I am a believer in affirmative action. Probably, my overanalytical mind is just going overboard but any shred of a clue would be appreciated. Anyone who has gotten in after being waitlisted? When and how would be helpful too! Stressing in Purgatory :-)
