Message: Are you insane? Taking on $80,000 means paying back more than double that amount over 10 years. If you're brilliant enough to get one of the few full scholarships offered at Michigan, I'd say take it. 1) Debt is not a small thing. And graduating without debt is a huge privilege and allows for unique opportunities. 2) Michigan is a good law school with a high academic reputation. 3) Law firms and judges hiring clerks will know that as a "Darrow Scholar" from Michigan means that you're hot shit. (I am not one such Scholar and obviously I'm at UM Law) 4) You might get lost among the sea of sharks at Harvard. 5) Everyone is special at Stanford. It's just a small self-agandizing pool. 6) If you're going to pass up Michigan for another school, please be smart about it. Choose Stanford--- better weather on any given day of the year. Don't buy into the Harvard hype, which is exactly what it is.
