This sort of distinction simply draws things too finely to make an evaluation. Hastings
is a good school. BC or GW are perhaps ranked higher. But any of these three schools, combined with top academics, will land you a good SF or LA job. When is "good" equal to "top tier".? It all depends. In order to tell you exactly what GPA/school quality would suffice in a May graduating class several years from now,we'd have to make a lot of assumptions about the future legal economy in CA which simply cannot be made now. You have to understand how during the recession the firms became much more selective, and now during the boom the ranges have changed altogether. It's probably safe to say that your only "sure in" is top 10 class rank from top 10 law school (and I won't belabor the old saw about how it's really a top 5 and a second 10). After that, there's too many variables. I enjoy the school rankings by the various bodies, and hearing about the exciting choices folks have to make. But
when the question is down to Hastings, BC or GW, you'd have to weigh the advantages of Hastings' west locale against the marginal reputation advantages of BC or GW. It's just not a clear enough case to make the comparison worthwhile, and rankings on this don't mean very much. I know how important school choice must be, but sometimes I think it's less important what school in the same basic tier you attend than how soon you get a good start on drafting your torts and contracts outlines.
If you want to find out more about schools, you might check out the younger associates' schools in the websites or MH (altho megafirms don't always list the young 'uns in MH). But I don't think in this situation that any light on the road to Damascus will point up a clear choice among Hastings, BC and GW for someone who wants an LA/SF job.
Hit the top 10 percent in your class first, and then you can spend a life wondering what if you'd attended the school you didn't pick
. Good fortune with whatever you choose! |
