I also hear that some senior associates passed up for partner are sometimes offered Of Counsel positions instead of being asked to leave. Is that also correct? |

I know of several senior associates who took time off to have kids and so blew their chances at partnership who are now of counsel; generally they are valuable enough that the firms wanted to keep them; or who have some specialized practice area. But in these days of fewer and fewer people making partner due to the economy, it's not necessarily "up and out" at law firms any more, and I think more senior associates who do good enough work and want to stick around are getting this option,
