First, you're welcome.
Second, there are actually a few reasons why I know a little about these programs. I have had several friends do BCLs as their Rhoades Scholarship (they earned their LL.B.s in Australia as their undergrad degree). I have also had several friends do their undergrad degrees in England; one read law at Oxford (you don't study at Oxford, you read...). Finally, I am interested in persuing a BCL or an LL.M. after working a few years post-JD--as I am a big dork, I have looked up their websites several times in the past.
As for LL.M. assessment, there are exams after every term for the BA (jurisprudence) at Oxford. While you must undergo final examinations, these allow for a certain level of assessment. Additionally, you are correct that professors take a bigger role, to the extent that they may predict final outcomes of your results.
It is quite common for top-notch students to proceed directly to american LL.M programs from England, so that is definitely a prime option for you.
In anycase, I think it's a great opportunity. YOu would happen to have EU nationality, would you? if so, the education costs plummet. Either way, it's still much cheaper than a JD. Between tuition and application fees, law schools make a killing. Speaking of making a killing, the LSDAS has quite a racket going. Anyway, I digress. I hope that helped a bit. If you have any other questions, I'll be more than happy to help. |

I am American so I guess i won't be able to take advantage of the cost reductions! oh well. but as you say it is less expensive than a 3 year JD.
But my question is whether I can justify going overseas for my law degree. My justification is I don't want to practice law in the US, or for that matter practice law at all. I want to return to banking with time spent in London and/or Asia, perhaps even permanently. If for some reason in the future I decide the law is for me rather than banking, I see the LLM as the option for obtaining qualification in the US. Additionally, the law programs at Cambridge and Oxford are a lot more 'academic' than vocational, which (i guess I'm a dork as well) i would enjoy more.
I think my concern is that everyone around me is so conscious of the H-Y-S schools that the option of going overseas is not appealing. I can understand the advantages of obtaining a US JD, but (to beat a dead horse) I don't want to practice. Maybe that in itself is the justification?
thoughts?
am curious, are you currently in law school now? Are you applying? if so, where?
