I actually did inquire whether it made a difference to get a JD or BA (law). I'm told not really as either way the law degree would come from a great school.
I heard about the senior status degree which is offered at both Cambridge and Oxford, basically I would do the degree in two years instead of three since I already have an undergraduate degree.
And you're right, the JD "equivalent" for lack of a better word is the BA in law at both Cambridge and Oxford.
The reason I inquire is because I was put in touch with an American who did her BA in law at Oxford (after a first BA at an American undergrad school) and then her LLM at Harvard. She is now at Cravath. She mentions how in three years time, she was able to obtain two degrees (the BA in Law from Oxford and the Harvard LLM) allowing her practice rights in two jurisdictions.
Also, I really have no intention to practice and if I did, I am told, if I obtain a LLM at a good US school, pass the bar, etc... I could practice in the US. |

Honestly, if you feel that your career will be aided by any law degree (as long as it's from a great university), and one of your goals is to get out of the country for a while, then go for the gold in britain. Do note, though, that you need very high grades to get into a top-notch LL.M program in the States.
